Default float fishing with live mackerel

What Derek says may be true but down here in Poole, over the Needles bridge
many use the float method with success and use a size 6/0 to 8/0 size hook
on a 30ft trace, live joeys are best however. You need a big cigar type
float.

Mackerel's more a late season bait. Generally freelined rather than
floated. Use quite a small hook - around 1/0 - or the mackerel will
unhook
itself - it's uncanny how they manage it.

Your problem is that the mackerel is capable of submerging any float small
enough to avoid unsettling the bass :-(

And the local professionals prefer small scad to mackerel whenever they
can
get 'em.

Cheerio,
