Of course, ADF&G won't tell you about the technique *they* use
if out in the woods with tourists or other "civilians". It's
called "The Buddy System", and you can use it too! Always
travel in bear country with a selected "buddy".
In the mid 90s, when I could still run (ok, jog), I was in Labrador
fly fishing for big brookies and pike. We went upriver to a spot that
has only been fished by about 40 people (including Lee Wulf), or so
they said.
My fishing partner was a friend from Connecticut. Lou was 7 years my
senior and had the wonderful heritage of an Italian mother and a
Jewish father. He sang in Italian, and cursed in Yiddish.
We were walking back to camp one day along a "trail". Lou said
something about there couldn't have been so few fishing this river
because there was a well worn path. I told him it wasn't a path, but
an animal run. He asked what kind of animal and I said, "Black
bears." Lou asked if I was afraid and I said no because I could run
faster than he, at which point Lou passed me and walked very quickly
back to camp (about 1/2 mile).
