Quick trip, quick TR
Headed out to Penn's Valley on Friday, to meet up with Handyman, who somehow
found himself beside Elk Creek without a fly vest. I arrived with a van load
of flies, extra tippet and the like, and we fished Elk and Penn's for a
couple of days. The fishing was far inferior to the simple pleasure of
tromping in the mountain woods with my old pal. Still, a few trout succumbed
to our efforts, the vast majority hitting Leadwing Coachman wets, a fine old
pattern, especially if Slate Drakes have been hatching.
It felt odd at first, trying cast gracefully, as the past few fishing
outings have consisted of lobbing 2-ounce plugs into the Ocean City
inlet.....speaking of casting gracefully,
Jonas is now selling a range of bamboo rods built by various Eastern
builders, some of which cast quite gracefully indeed. Penn's has a good head
of cool water and should be just fine for the streamer fishing in late
October. Anyone interested can join us from October 24-28 for the chance to
encounter Penn's larger resident browns............
