I've tried several products but the only thing that really
works is Deet. Deet will melt a plastic fly line and render
any fly it touches totally unusable for trout fishing, but
it's the only insect repellant that works. I buy 100% Deet
in spray-on bottles so I can spritz it on without getting
it on my hands.

DEET is a heckuva product but it will also eat through expensive
electronic unit/depth finder screens, waders and other expensive
plastics/rubbers. Thats probably bc it contain tuolene, something
that is used in paint remover.

I usually use Off! Deep Woods for Sportsmen and it contains 30%
deet. It's messy, stinks ya up good, doesn't taste well on a sandwich
(late at night) and is something that needs washed up from you as soon
as you get off of the water. And, unless it's 30 minutes before or
after dusk in the swamps of Florida, it does the job of keeping
mosquitoes off of you.

Deet isn't recommended for kids. However, there is a product
called OFF! Skintastic that has a small amount of Deet (7%) which
comes in a spray bottle that does a good job keeping mosquitoes away
from the children...if they are in a serious mosquito situation. If
we're out immediately before or after dusk...that's what we use for
our kids.

However, if it's just general preventative mosquito care, Avon
sells a product called "Skin-So-Soft" which contains citronella oil
that is really pretty good, IMO, and doesn't contain any DEET. Its a
great product for kids and anyone else who can't stand any DEET.

IMO, DEET and my fishing tackle/lures (especially soft plastics)
do not mix and "now" I'm real careful not to spray in the middle of my
boat (toward my electronics or tackle).
