My new boat doesn't have a bulb, but on one of my old boats, I would give it
a pump every time I unloaded the boat. Usually the bulb was reasonably hard
and wouldn't take more than one or two for each outing.

If you have to pump and pump before the bulb is rigid, you might have an air
leak in either the fuel line or the bulb.
