My wife & I went fishing this morning (Sunday). The fellow who runs the only
bait & tackle shop on the lake didn't show up today until 1 p.m. He is also
one of the folks who acts like he's doing you a favor by showing up at all.
Don't ask him for advice, that's "not his job". While we were there, Tim
Farmer (host of PBS's Kentucky Afield), dropped by. The bait shop fellow
never heard of him.
At the lake where we used to go, the tackle shop was open from 6 a.m. till
dark every day. The guy running it lived and breathed fishing. If you had a
pretty good day, he'd take your picture with your fish and hang it on the
bulletin board until he had to cover it up with a newer picture. He'd talk
about fishing all day if you wanted.

I agree with the others about finding a friendly bait shop or tackle shop.
In some you will find folks who love to talk to anybody about fishing. In
others, you're lucky if you can talk them into taking your money, much
less
getting any help from them.
On the "Fishin' Stuff" page of my website, there's a table with links to
all
the states that offer fishing license online. With most of them, you can
print your license on your own printer after paying by credit card. A few
of
them tack on a fee of a couple of bucks for the privilege of buying
online.
If you buy them from your local dealer, you're helping him/her out & you
have an instant conversation-starter to see what you can learn from them.
Good luck.
