Hi,

I've got to visit Ross-on-Wye on Saturday 22 Oct with the family and
plan on sneaking a few hours fishing on the river Wye (why not?).

Is the river the best local venue? What fish are in the Wye?

What bait could anyone recommend there? It would be pooh to blank on
my one and only Wye day because of the wrong bait. I want to travel
light and will only have a few, 4-5, hours.

Where is the best location?

I use to fish the Wye a lot when I lived in Cardiff and I've had some great
days fishing there, but since moving away, I only go on the odd occasion
now.

It's been around 6 years or so since I last fished the Wye at Ross, but if I
recall, the town water is available on day ticket. Problem is, I can't
recall where I got my day ticket from. Try looking up some tackle shops in
the area and give them a phone call, I'm sure they'll have some info. Fairly
sure most of the rest of the Wye in that area is all club water or syndicate
for Salmon.

As for fish to be caught, I would say mainly a Dace and Chub river, although
Roach, Perch and of course Brown Trout to be picked up especially when using
maggot. However, there use to be a ban on maggot until after 31st October,
although I don't know if this is still in place.

The Wye is a big river and when I use to fish I would take a minimum of 6
pints of maggots, boiled hemp and ground bait and then fish a waggler or
feeder depending upon water level and condition.

If you want to travel light, then I would suggest ledger fishing with worms,
luncheon meat or make up some cheese paste. Then look for a good feature,
such as a over hanging bushes, trees etc., where fish will by lying near
roots. If the river is a little low, try looking for deeper pools. For both
types, cast up stream and let the lead drop down into the pool or next to
the roots etc. Don't forget to put in free offerings when using luncheon
meat or cheese paste.
