Tiny Florida Research Group is Swamped with Foreign Fishing Fleet

When the President of the United States comes out against something,
sometimes there is an unexpected silver lining for others. The
announcement by President George Bush of a proposed ban on worldwide
bottom trawler fishing has brought a flood of requests to a tiny
Florida research firm from Brazil, Chile, Germany, Spain, Russia and
other nations. Boats dragging huge nets along the ocean bottom have
long been a concern of conservation groups which object to the fishing
practice. The Pew Charitable Trust environment program has been leading
a coalition of more than 60 conservation groups against the fishing
practice. Some of the largest fishing fleet operators are now hopeful
use of the signal-sending device made by the Florida firm may
"cool" Presidential ire.

No pipe dream, the concept applies physical science precepts governing
pressure transmission through fluids to transmit sub-surface waves fish
believe come from an injured fish following near the boat. Even better
for fishermen, no bait is needed on the hook. Called SONARLURE, the
Fluid Dynamic science-based cigar-shaped devices are pulled through the
water causing them to generate signals based on those injured fish send
out. Tuned to specific frequencies, the sub-surface signals make bigger
fish want to attack the lure "sender" which hides a hook. Unlike
baited hooks which have to be seen by nearby fish, a group of these
signaling lures on a rig attached to a stainless steel leader is used
to bring fish from distances where they can be later caught.


The development of a series of patented devices for sending signals to
specific fish follows a much heralded WWII Government project in which
researchers attempted to train Dolphin with signals to place explosive
devices on enemy shipping. The program was detailed in the movie "Day
of the Dolphin" featuring George C. Scott in the lead role. Fifteen
years of later research led SONARLURE to the concept of generating
signals using the friction of water against external vibrating
"lobes" rather than electronics. Originally intended for commercial
use, the firm is rushing to complete "beta testing" of seven fresh
and salt water consumer versions, expecting to begin marketing early
next year.

Testing of the commercial version has been under way off Alaska and in
waters near Scotland over the past year with spectacular results.
Valdez Alaska charter operator clients have been bringing in giant
catches while others on the boat without the lures fare less well. Deep
water fishing off the Shetland Islands has brought in crate after crate
of Cod. Loan of a "beta test" consumer version to a Bimini
tournament participant resulted in winning the Boston Whaler sponsored
event which let the "cat out of the bag".


Announcement of a proposed consumer version drew 11,282 emails and
"crashed" the mail server after a Miami Herald writer told of the
successful results she had with a single test sample. She later
repeated the result with a triple sending unit and an attached lure
with hook in the Gulf Stream. The research firm has agreed to give away
some of its latest test versions this month to everyday anglers who
