I am surprised the tank has lasted as long as it has. After working
on a few tanks at zoos and large homes, both new and reconstruction I
see many mistakes that were made. The most serious is the use of
Ferrous iron for the window framing. If he is seeing rust above the
waterline, the inside of the steel tubes should be rusting away also.
If you want it to last Stainless(sp) steel is the only way to go. One
inch glass, unless it is a laminate, is pushing the limit for a 5'
depth. The pressure at that level should have overcome the ability of
just GE 1200 to maintain adherence to the glass and the steel.
Normally at that depth you would use a neoprene(sp) gasket under
compression for a seal.

All in all a nice idea.
