I think that was made up from the original Glen Lau movie "Bigmouth",
filmed (if I remember correctly) on the Crystal River in Florida with
Homer Circle. If this is the case, they were fishing with hooks, but the
movie underscored the fact that bass can hit lures more than you think and
still get away. I remember an interview with Glen and he'd film a bass
striking, then surface and ask the angler why he missed it, and the angler
hadn't even felt the strike!
