I just looked at rec.woodworking. It does have all of those things,
however:
1) there are fewer off topic posts than here (take a look)
2) far less bickering
3) *more* commercial spam, but not that much more

You seem to complain (about rec.woodworking) that questions about
what stain to use are a bad thing. I say that's what the newsgroup
is meant to deal with. Here we get so little on topic conversation
of any kind a little elementary stuff would be a welcome change.

Yes, all of usenet has been diminished by the allure of
interactive forums that allow icons, images, etc.

But many usenet groups are doing just fine, despite all that.
rec.woodworking was just one example. ROFF has lost so
much traffic it seems to be heading for oblivion .

Is that a troll or an observation worth talking about?

Interesting that you only chose to respond to one tiny portion of my
post. Did you miss the rest of my point (i.e., a newsgroup is what you
make of it; if you don't like the content you do something about it)?

Did you also miss where I discussed the likely reasons why there is
more volume on the wreck?
