This was a question I asked before I bought my first baitcaster. I
use a left hand retrieve and I'm right handed. I searched the web and
asked questions in this forum, as well as asking my friends that all
use baitcasters.

The ONLY decent answer I got out of anyone is that if you cast with
the same hand, you have to conscientiously move your hand off of the
casting trigger.

Sounds kind of silly, but it took a little time to get used to it
without me knowing about it.

When I outfish my buds that right cast/right return, I tell 'em it's
because I can cast twice as many times, what with all that switching
hands they do and whatnot...

I was asking the quantum reps before I bought my reel. One said it was
force of habit but he wouldn't switch hands using a spinning reel.
Another quantum rep said it is usually oldtimers who do it since at
one time they only had right hand retrieve reels. Another explanation
was sore arms and switching casting arms and retrieving hands.
A shimano rep advised me to get the left hand retrieve reel.
Another consideration was there was a nice clearance sale on a older
model right hand retrieve reel. Opted for the left hand reel.



I think you made the right choice...
