I have almost 400 yards on my largest sal****er spools. I can't imagine
hand-coloring all that backing. And if those markers aren't truly permanently
colorfast, you could end up with a spool full of brown backing.

As for splicing (or coloring) multiple backing colors ( two) that seems like
overkill to me. I'm not cooking up a rating system ("Yeehaw, man! That bone
took out five colors!") all I really want to know is if it's time to pull up
the anchor (figurative or literal, depending) and give chase...
