I have a hunch there would be huge market for
do-it-yourself lure-making stuff, it there was a fast
quick and easy way to make crankbaits. I'll get this
stuff online soon enough.

But basically it's easy: cut the body shape (with scissors)
out of lite weight closed-cell EVA foam. Cut a diving bill
(with scissors) from clear plastic sheeting (from the boxes
they package peppers in at Cosco, for instance). Glue the
bill to the foam with super glue or epoxy. Glue on some
weight, in the right places. Add as much weight as you want,
to make the lure as heavy as you want. Run a thin-diameter but
relatively stiff plastic tube through the foam body, from
the rear end to a hole in the diving lip. Snell a tippet
to what ever hook you like. Thread the tippet through the tube
and knot it to swivel, perhaps 12" up from the diving bill.

You can add feathers, dangling spinners, skirts, what ever you want.
Crankbaits cost what? 4-7 bucks each? You can make these
for peanuts, and they're better lures. Once you learn how
to tune the bills, you can custom create any action of diving
depth you want.

Hand painted, hand carved plugs can take a week to make.
Foam divers you can make in about ten minutes, or less.
