Default Penns TR- Fish and Fish Frustration

Friday evening- I drove down tunnel road and the cottage area was
lined with fisherman. This was about 7 PM. Fish were working the
entire length, at least to the bridge. There were a couple of
fisherman below the bridge and I saw very few fish working there.
But, but above the bridge there was no one but the fish were all over
the riffles! I moved up above the riffles and watched the fish. I
had never seen anything like this before on Penns! In the main
current, an area of about 15 by 15 feet, there were at least a dozen
fish working! I could look and there always seemed to be at least 4
or 5 mouths grabbing something on or near the surface at the same
time. I thought to myself, "All these mouths to "feed" but what are
the hungry for"? The feeding frenzy lasted for about 30 to 35
minutes. I got two nice fish on a Sulphur emerger- the orange
"flavored" kind. I saw one other person get a fish below the bridge.
When I check with a reliable source fishing in front of the cottages,
he said no one got anything but a case of the Penns fish
frustrations. I guess that's why there was no one at all from Stan's
Pool to down around the bend from the bridge on Saturday night. But
before we get to Saturday night let me tell you about Saturday
morning. I walked down stream from the bridge a mile or so. It was
very sunny- crap! I started fishing about 9:30. There was a blue
quill spinner fall happening but the fish were only mildly interested
in it. I fished underneath- I figured no sense in casting to fish
that rise every 10 minutes or so. It was tough fishing- but in the
two hours I hooked 10 fish (2 suckers) and brought 6 to hand including
an 18 incher! I got some of the fish, including the big guy on a size
12 March Brown nymph. I got the others on bead head PT in sizes 16
and 18. Not a bad morning for mid-June. By the way, the water temp
was 63 degrees.
Saturday night- I wasn't sure where I was going to fish so before
dinner I drove down past the cottages again. More fish working in the
entire section down and around the bend. This was 4:30. I went back
to town, got a bite and was back at 5:30. Fish still working! Fish
still working in the glaring sun! What's with these fish? They were
taking something below the surface. Looking closely at the water,
there was a small smorgasbord of small bugs. I hooked two on small
blue quills on top- must have been the less selective of the group. I
walked down around the bend from the bridge and of course thee were
fish all over the place. Slap, gulp, slap, gulp, you get the idea. I
tried 6 or 7 different patterns, blue guill, sulphers (in lemon as
well as orange), emergers, and others. I got one fish on a rusty
brown dry in size 20. I was very successful in practicing my fly
changing technique. That's one of the drills we've all been through
on Penns.
I talked to one of my friends who fished Inglesby that evening and he
said he another guy got 4 on BWO- all small fish. I guess that wraps
up Penns for me until September. My trailer is clean (I mean cleaner
than it was).
Hope this helps.
