I get the chance to spend a long weekend up at June Lake, near Mammoth
Lakes on
the eastern Sierra. Any tips on where to fish this time of year? Any
agreement on what's the best local fly shop to drop in on?
www.thetroutfitter.com in the town of Mammoth Lakes and
www.brocksflyfish a
few miles south in Bishop. Both have online fishing reports and staffs that
I've found to be helpful and knowledgeable. Without giving away any
secrets, a few waters you might want to consider (assuming that you're
flyfishing) are Rush Creek in the June Lake loop, Hot Creek and the Upper
Owens in the vicinity of Mammoth Lakes, and the Owens Gorge and wild trout
section closer to Bishop. Are lakes your thing? Convict has been turning
out some big stockers in the 3-5 pound range. The majority of the fishing
at Convict is by bait dunkers, but I've heard that the new owners of the
lodge want to steer things much more toward flyfishing. Have a good time
wherever you decide to go!
Cheers,
Bill
