Here's the Fishing Report from the fly shop in Boulder Junction, WI:

Trout

Inland Trout season ends Saturday September 30th, but low water levels
have hurt our trout populations and it is best for the survival of the
resource to cease all your trout fishing for the season!

Damn the luck. Now what ? ...
Well, I think that the owner of said shop, while a good musky
fisherman, is full of it.

The southern part of the State has too much water right now, if
anything. And while there are some streams in the NE that are very low
the fact is that if you were to go to the Western part of the State
you'd find good water levels. The spring ponds are in good shape. The
Bois Brule has plenty of water right now. Even up here on the Prairie
you would find low water but not dangerously low. The water temps are
very good right now too.

Except for a few streams in the far NE I think you can safely ignore
him. I will.

The far NE part of Wisconsin and the SW part of the UP
are the trout waters he's talking about in his Fishing
Reports, he doesn't intend his Fishing Reports to apply
statewide. And like most people who make their living
in the fishing business he *is* full of it, ;-) but I
do trust his Fishing Reports.

Have some friends who fished the UP near Watersmeet last weekend.
Water was a little low but, again, not low to the point where fish
would die from it. They fished the well known streams that most people
fish and did well.

Also last weekend I took my 9 year old for a bike ride on a State
trail that crosses a stream about 20 miles from Sherer's place.

That particular stream looked fine. I'd take his pronouncements with a
grain of salt. In the past he has tended towards alarmism in regards
to trout streams.

Just my opinion though.

If you think he's an alarmist about trout streams tell him
the first time you catch a 50" musky on a fly rod you're
gonna have it mounted. Be sure you've reviewed the chapter
on apoplexy in your First Aid book. ;-)

I'm starting to think that if the water temps are cool enough
I might go ahead and fish the trout streams up there anyway.
The water was extremely low in the Grand Marais area this year
but the water temps were fine and I fished for a week without
killing a fish that I know of. Low water concentrates the fish
making them easier to catch, but if you fish areas that don't
see a lot of fishing pressure low water shouldn't matter so
much. That's my theory anyway and since I can't find a Wisconsin
River shuttle after Labor Day (you don't know of one, do you ?)
I'm starting to lean towards going up there come hell or low water.

Nice stream shots, btw.
