move on to a discussion of the best knot for attaching leader to
fly line.

That's an easy one: The Gordian Knot.

I prefer "Johnson's Improved Gordian"®.

Tip of the day:

While you at it, leave a loop sticking out of the mess -- attachment
for a dropper.


Sometimes that knot has a loop (or two or three) and sometimes it doesn't.
