We think in terms of only fishing those bass lures that have become standard
fare, you all know what I mean. Spinnerbaits, crank baits, jigs, worms each
rod had a standard when we head out to the water.

A few Saturday's ago while we were experiencing a nice Indian Summer Judy
and I went to the Kankakee River, usually muddy and always with a lot of
fishing pressure. This Saturday was different in that the water was gin
clear and in the low 70's still. I sat in the boat waiting for Judy to come
back from parking the tow vehicle and watched several guys heading up a
section of the river that's popular but never produces large numbers of
fish. It's good for a decent fish or two. I got to thinking fish slow/small
and different.

We got out the spinning rods and I tied on two small gold beetle spins, put
a small rootbeer colored grub on each and off we went behind three other
boats. We also decided long casts. By the end of the day we had twenty nice
smallies between the two of us. Same strategy worked the next two Saturdays.
The water temps have dropped considerably with last Sat finding them in the
high 50s. But we still drilled em with 10 nice largemouth averaging around 3
lbs in the boat.

Sometimes . . . doing something different works great.
