Because of logistics, I will be buying 18 identical sets of fishing
gear for the kids' trip. That means the same make/model rod, reel and
color/type of line.
The question is: how can I have the kids personalize their rod and/or
reel so that they can tell it apart from the others? I'm thinking of
silly little ways like wrapping different colored thread around the
shaft, or taping their name under the reel foot, but maybe someone has
a better idea?

A ballpoint pen on the cork grip should be good. Impressing the name
in the cork should last a long time.
IF you can get a viberating etcher initials on the butt will be
forever as well.
A LIE! A LIE! A DAMNABLE LIE, I TELL YOU! Billy Bob and Angelina
promised each other the same thing, and just look...she has to lie to
Brad and call him "big Brad" and Thornton has to tell hookers he and
Tony Soprano's son are just real close friends...
A carbide marker will do the same thing. If you
have a local jeweler do it the quality of the name may increase pride
of wonership.
**** that local stuff - have Tiffany & Co. do it...
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know, you're calling the William Morris Agency,
