IF one has the option of choosing a time .... August ain't it, imho

Even in a mythical "normal" year crowds are big, hatches small in the
Greater Yellowstone Area in August. And 5 of the last 6 years have been
far drier/ hotter than "normal." Last year many streams were closed to
fishing by August. Even family touristy efforts are poorer in the crowds
and heat of the eighth month ... most animals, for instance, having moved to
high country areas far from roads.

One can never predict, but I'd aim for June 1 to mid July, OR mid-Sept to
"too damn cold" .... both for fishing and viewing. Before mid June, the
options for fishing can be limited, but are likely to be very enjoyable
options.
