One of the reasons to use backing is to increase the diameter
of the reels spool. The larger the diameter of the spool the
faster the retrieve and the less coiling and memory imparted
to the fly line. So I use as much backing as I can while
leaving about 1/8" gap at the top of the fully loaded spool.
