A weaker link. Say you are using 5lb main line, put the weight on a 3lb
link and cast gently - if a fish pulls the weight into a snag you can pull
for a break and probably retain the fish.

Sea anglers sometimes have unlatching arrangements to allow them to cast
with a shock leader and then fish with the weight on a much lighter link.
