My first experiment with fly fishing was with a bait casting rod and
no reel. I cast it a bit better than I now cast a fly rod with fly
reel. It can be done. And can be fun to do. I could only get about
20 feet out of it and only within about 3 feet of where I was aiming,
but it was my first time trying fly fishing in any way, shape, or
form. And the line did do the propelling.
Interesting. Was it a fly line? If not, I bet it was hard to mend. I saw
Lefty Kreh make about a 20 foot cast with a fly line using his arm as the rod.

Yes, it was a fly line. I had no idea at the time that one could cast
a fly on any other line. As for mending, I didn't try it much. I was
casting up and a little across to a rising fish, which I, naturally,
scared away in the process. Then I was casting just for fun and to
see what I could do with it. Shortly after that I got my first fly
rod. Oh, and it was a dry fly I was casting. Just the fly line, a
bit of mono, and the fly. I didn't know about tippets. An impulsive
day, that has had interesting results. When my bait chucker reel
(which I was using with a small lure) went into terminal mode, I'd
driven into the nearest town and bought a fly line and three flies and
started to play.
I have to amend the above. I knew the word tippet, because I'd been
reading here to learn about trout, but I was trying to learn to spin
fish at the time and hadn't paid much attention to the stuff about fly
fishing, except as it related to the behaviour of trout. I had no
idea what the word tippet meant. I wasn't spinning that afternoon
because of some idiot reason I can't recall. Shouldn't have been wind
or the fly casting fun wouldn't have worked for me.

Often taunted by trout.
Only a fool would refuse to believe in luck. Only a damn fool would rely on it.
