Default Cancun Fishing

Last week, my wife and I went to Cancun courtesy of a radio contest that
my wife won. We were flown down from O'Hare airport to Cancun, where we
spent five glorious days at the Riu Cancun Hotel. Not being able to
spend that much time near that much water and not fish, I brought a
medium light spinning rod and a small tacklebox with some assorted soft
plastics, swimbaits and Secret Weapon spinnerbaits. I didn't spend a
lot of time fishing, but I cast a bit from some rocks at the edge of the
hotel property. I managed to get this guy landed, but screwed up on
three or four more fish of unknown species. From what the locals tell
me, this is an incredibly large needlefish, but all I know is he hit
like a ton of bricks and stripped a lot of line off before I got him
under control.

I've got to go back and actually do some serious fishing. The reports I
heard from other guests at the hotel made me realize there's more to
Cancun than white sand beaches and umbrella drinks.

Yup, that's a needlefish. They are notorious for stealing bait and, much
like gar, are tough to catch since they seem to hit everything but the hook.
