Straightening bent rims

Lets say a friend of mine fell on the rocks and slightly dented
the rim of his cartridge reel so its out of round a little bit.
Now, when he palms the reel, instead of a smooth rub, he gets
this pulsating because of the dent. Its not enough to make the
reel chirp, but its enough to be bothersome. Or so he tells me.
Are there any tricks for making the cartridge true again, so it
has that nice silky feeling it used to?

New reels are cursed I tell you! (I know your friend's probably
wasn't that new) ... anyway ...
A "friend" of mine has a habit of dropping every fly reel he has
ever owned before using them ... some of them twice. Each of them
has the "character" to which Frank referred. A day being jammed
against rocks and drownded would be paradise compared with the
"treatment".
Once spooled back into the box - before it leaps to a
sickening but, so far, non-terminal thud. Even then they are not
always safe. The latest, a Ross has been spooled and reboxed ...
to "his" knowledge the Box has been ..err .. exposed to the whim of
gravity three times.
