Keep in mind you do have a new hunting dog that is counting
on you to shoot birds for her for the next decade or so.
She's spectacular. My wife does the handling at Puppy Kindergarten
and she & Kaylin were in the ring for the first class when the
instructor placed several items of "distraction" around the ring.
She put out umbrellas, metal fence parts, a singing frog, a monkey
clashing cymbals and a stuffed duck. Kaylin made a beeline for the
duck, picked it up ever so gently and trotted all the way across
the ring to deposit it right at my feet. My wife said my beaming
smile could have lit up a small city. No training at all, 13 weeks
old and she knows just what to do with a duck.
My wife says Kaylin has her Daddy wrapped around her little paws
but I don't see anything on her paws. ;-)
No hunting for Kaylin this season, she'll only be six months old.
We'll do basic obedience first and foremost then start training to
the gun at a year old next spring. Hopefully she'll be ready to
hunt in Fall 2009. And I'll be there to shoot the birds for her.
