I doubt if this newsgroup started before that, I can remember when our
first IBM PC appeared at the office in 1981; it had an 8088 processor
(or was it an 8086?) with 64 Mb of memory and no hard drive. An
internet might have been in use by a few scientists before that but I
don't think it became widely used by the public until much later. I
started using the web in the early 1990's and I was by no means an
early adopter.
