It's impossible to tell if your eleven year old can use a hand auger on his
own. There are some pretty big eleven years olds that could do it easily,
there are some that are pretty small and do not have the size or strength to
use one.

Why don't you take him out and let him try one? That's the only way you'll
know for certain....
