I'm shocked to realize that I've known him for nearly forty years.
He was enormously entertaining, but he was also a consistent, insidious
and ferocious advocate for values of liberty and decency that are
rapidly being dissipated in both Britain and America.
I'll miss him, and shall think of him with every glass of champagne
that I drink for quite a while.
He was, incidentally, for all his sybaritic image, enormously
hard-working, and he loved writing as much as he enjoyed flirting with
young women and telling mildly risqué stories over a long, alcoholic
lunch (which is quite a lot).
