Default Jackson Tournament and Practice

What a difference two weeks make!

Saturday - January 24, 2009 - Day 24
Practice for club tournament - rain, water 43 - 48

Got up to rain but went to Jackson anyway - rained from the time I got
up till I got the boat in the water at about 10. I rode some channels
and jigged on some shad and stuff under them but no hits, also tried
some seawalls and deep banks, including where Jordan got the keeper
two weeks ago.

Rain stopped around noon and I kept looking for fish. At about two I
was fishing a seawall and pitched a jig head worm to a brushpile under
a dock and got a 11 inch bass - first bite, not a keeper.

Tried a little more then rode over a deep point that used to hold fish
a lot in the winter and it was covered with bait and fish. Jigged a
spoon and caught a 2 pounder. Got in my marker and rode over the
point - fish and brush everwhere. Know where I am going to fish most
of day tomorrow.

Club was weighing in when I took my boat out - took 4.5 pounds to win
and nobody had more than two fish. They said they caught them fairly
shallow but that reinforces my desire to fish those deep fish
tomorrow.

Sunday - January 25, 2009 - Day 25

Partner and I ran up the lake at 7:30 headed to the point where I
caught the fish yesterday - it was 38 and cool riding. As we idled
under a bridge near the point I told him I was going to hit a deep
dock with a brush pile under it across from the point if the light was
on. It was and we started there. One of my first casts with a jig and
pig I was reeling it in and just before it got to the boat I saw a two
pound spot following it - it turned away rather than hitting it. Told
my partner that might be the pattern for me for the day - bad luck.

That made me stay on the dock longer than I planned and just as I
started to leave one of my club members came under the bridge and went
straight to the point and started fishing - really messed up my mind.

We fished another nearby point and finally David left. I had noticed a
guy trolling for crappie and as we headed for the point I could tell
he was trolling right over the area I had caught the fish. I gave up
and took off up to the area where I had caught fish two weeks ago.
Would not pull in right where he was trolling.

We worked the area hard and my partner got a 2.3 pound largemouth on a
jig head worm. At 11:30 that was the only bite we had gotten. Ran
back down to the point and nobody was on it. We started fishing it. I
dropped my spoon down to one brushpile, jigged it a couple of times
and something thumped it. I set the hook and pulled the fish up about
two feet then it pulled me back down into the brush. Ended up breaking
off.

Stayed out there for about an hour and the same thing happened to my
parterner. He was fighting a strong fish and it hung him up and broke
him off.

We hit some more places without a bite.

At weigh-in four people had one bass and one guy had two. He won with
3.11 pounds. Second was one fish at 2.5 and my patner came in third
with 2.3 Six zeroes, including me. Terrible way to start the year in
that club.
