hey, i am being bombarded by popups hawking "spyware protect 2009

Daniel's advice on malwarebytes is good - it will take of the problem (yes, it's
a virus/trojan, and it is fairly well-known by a couple of names). Run the full
scan, follow the instructions incl. rebooting, and re-run the full scan. Also,
download the latest security patch/"malicious software removal tool" (if you are
running XP, 2000, Vista). FWIW, to both you and Bill Grey, AVG didn't catch it
on some of our machines, but I do like AVG Free (Grisoft) in general for basic
security. If you want chapter and verse on manual removal - it involves editing
the registry, so be careful, Google "spyware protect 2009" and you'll find more
than you want to know. Again, I'd agree with Daniel and simply get
malwarebytes.
