Three reasons I can think of:

1. Internet commerce.

2. Cabelas, Bass Pro, etc.

3. No decent fly fishing anywhere near Silicon Valley, at least that I
know of.

Every fly shop I've been to in Silicon Valley has been a yuppie haven
for A River Runs Through It aficionados. They sell more in clothing and
designer umbrella stands and hand carved walking sticks than they do fly
fishing gear.

When I'm in the SF Bay Area and I need fly fishing stuff I go to:

Leland Fly Fishing Outfitterswww.flyfishingoutfitters.com
463 Bush St. (at Grant)
San Francisco, CA 94108
(415) 781-3474

I'll second the Leland outfitters. Also, they have a very cool fly
tying hat.
