It says on their website that they are selectively bred zebra fish.

I was expecting some genetically modified creature. Rainbow trout the skin
of which had the chromatophores from a squid or cuttlefish. The fish could
flash signals to you such as; fast red flash- wrong fly, flashing yellow-
bad cast ROTBLMAO, slow green - I'm hungry.
I was in an aquarium once and showed some kids that the squid would turn red
if you held some red next to the tank wall, yellow if something yellow etc.
Successive groups of kids kept the things going for a couple of hours I
wonder if squid suffer from pallet depletion.

From the AP link at the NY Times:

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- The nation's first genetically altered

household
pet -- a fish that glows in the dark -- is set to begin appearing in

stores
next month everywhere except perhaps California, the only state with a ban
on lab-engineered species.

On Wednesday, the California Fish and Game Commission is scheduled to take
up an application from Yorktown Technologies of Austin, Texas, to market
the GloFish in California.

How long before these show up in Bait Shops??
