What would be your recommendations for say a 9', 5-6 weight general
purpose Western combination with a budget of about $1000?

Am I the only plebian in ROFF?

I wouldn't dream of spending $1K on rod-reel-line [ except, perhaps,
if I were one of those dilettantes pursuing billfish offshore ].

Once I get above ......... 150 or so, I can't tell the difference in
good vs. bad. *Differences in types, flex, stiff,
etc.......yeah........but, other than externals, such as trim, it is
beyond my capability of detection.

For reels, if it has a smooth, reliable drag......what else counts?

Lines: *floats, shoots, and lasts......what else?

Same for wine, for me.....

Now.......single malt.....AHA, I can taste that OK.

But then, my daily driver is a '79 MGB.......and I sneer at Miata
pussies.

All of which makes a boy wonder.....

I've fished with a goodly number of the regular contributors here (as
well as with many other folks) and have often been impressed by the
level of mastery displayed by a high percentage of them. And I think
that most of them would grant me (however grudgingly in some cases) a
run of the mill competence as well. What I know for sure (and I
suspect that most would agree) is that there is no way in hell I could
identify any particular brand (let alone model or size) of fly rod,
reel, line, leader, tippet or connector in a blind test (not as absurd
a proposition as it might sound to those who have never fished the hex
hatch here in the upper Great Lakes region).

Seriously, how many of you think that you could accurately identify
even your favorite component or combination consistently by feel and/
or results alone when interspersed among others?
