sure he wants to learn to fly fish as a way of bonding with his only
child (me). And I view it as a way of bonding with an 80 year old WW II
veteran who is still doing pretty good for his age. He's spry for his
age and I know we could fish together (maybe even successfully).

good god. surely you must understand that simply standing with your
father by a stream, watching the water flow, and talking about things you
never had the time to cover in the years past, would far surpass any
technical queries. still, an 8'4weight will do just fine.
