Christmas is approaching, and this is the time of year when we say

interest in learning how to fly fish. He's an old bait caster and I'm

age and I know we could fish together (maybe even successfully). So
would a 9' 5 wt. DS2 be good for him to cast optimally when we go out
next spring? We're in Massachusetts. We fish the Millers and Deerfield
Rivers.

I'd think about getting him an ultralight spinning outfit. Then show him how
to use your fly rod if he wants. You and he can switch rods occasionally
and he'll probably enjoy it a lot more. The comradeship you'll achieve that
way will be superior.
