I was at my local fly shop today. The owner was off fishing and I have
never met the new guy behind the counter. I was supplying up with
tippet material, couple of leaders, some Frog's Fanny and Gink, and
other supplies, including a cool pair of shorts. (You should see me in
shorts, Fortenberry!)

Anyway, I was telling the guy about going up to the Rapid this Sunday,
having only fished small Georgia and NC streams during the winter. He
told me a big brookie, 6 pounds was caught last week by a guy that had
been in the store just before me. He said the guy drew a map of where
he caught it.

The clerk tried to show me the map, but I turned away and told him I
can draw a map of where the fish was caught - exact spot within 50 ft.
He was skeptical. I drew a map of Wing Dam Pool, the island, and
First, Second, and Third Currents. I then drew a small rectangle next
to the island in Second Current, and showed him the map. They were
identical.

The only six pound brookies caught this early in the season would have
to be a Wing Dam or Pondy fish who was feeding off of the sucker spawn.
I don't fish the spawn any more. I think the fish are abused by being
hooked so often while gorging themselves of the spawn.

I know where that six pounder lives (or maybe it's his brother), and I
will have him before the season is over.
