I haven't been paying close attention to the news (sort of a pet
project of mine, avoiding news.....not that I'm anywhere near as good
at it as I'd like to be), but the last I heard the Asian carp had not
yet made it's debut appearance in Lake Michigan. But it most
certainly will. And once it's there it will take up permanent
residence. Guaranteed.

I grew up with the first rockstar great lakes invasive species, the
sea lamprey. It's still here. So is the alewife which raised such a
stink (you could literally smell them in their rotting billions miles
from the lakeshore) back in the 60s. Last I heard, there are some 165
or so KNOWN invasive species in the great lakes. NONE has ever been
eliminated. In all likelihood, none ever will be. Here's why:

1. Money. That doesn't need to be explained or the explanation would
be wasted.
2. When the salmon and trout planted in the great lakes in an effort
to help control the alewife population succeeded to the point of
reducing their food supply.....and thus their own selves.....it was
seriously suggested in some circles that alewives should be bred and
stocked to shore up supplies. See no. 1 above.
3. Mostly, nobody cares.
4. Bubba. Bubba will stock Asian carp in Lake Michigan because he
can. It will make it possible for him to pretend (for however short a
time) to feel powerful. See just about any thread in ROFF for
examples. Bubba will also ensure that quagga muscles WILL find their
way into Idaho despite the state's laughably paltry efforts.....

5. One could go on for days.

who supposes that roughly 900 billion dollars and 4,420 fresh corpses
over the next seven years or so MIGHT have the tiniest chance of
making a difference......but where ya gonna find taxpayers willing to
foot that kind of bill for nothing?
