precisely the key point. This is a national issue because of
hate-politics, pure and simple. As you know, I've also spent a bit of
time in that neck of the woods, and your description of the area is
pretty good. In fact, post 9/11, the neighborhood(having somewhat less
traffic from upscale business-types than it once did) is verging toward
seedy in spots. Nothing says 'patriotism' like folks selling 'made in
China' American flags and 9/11 memorabilia. Given the large numbers of
Muslims living and working in and around that part of town, a cultural
center is a fine idea.
On the other hand, a Hooters is ok, I supposeg.
