Sunday - November 7, 2010 - Day 246 - 65 days missed
Flint River Bass Club tournament
Lake Lanier - clear and cold, some wind but not much
6:30 AM - 3:00 PM
In this tournament, if I caught one keeper I would win the point
standings in the club for the year - would have enough points no one
could catch me in the last tournament even if I Zero.
Started in the fog throwing a Sammy on a bluff bank and point. No
hits. Got one thump on a spinnerbait but covered the area with
jerkbait, crankbait and jig and pig with no hook-ups.
Ran around to a shallow hump with brush out in front of it and landed
a 13.5 inch spot on a jig and pig from 28 feet of water - size limit
on Lanier is 14 inches.
Worked down the shady bank past a dock and a little dip had two
blowdowns in it. Cast into the bigger one about six times and then
got a bump on the jig and pig. Set the hook and landed a 3 pound spot
at 8:15. I relaxed - the one I needed was in the livewell.
Got kinda lazy and fished down the bluff bank around docks for a long
way - got some thumps on the jig and pig but didn't hook anything.
fished that area till 11 AM with nothing.
Ran to a point on the main lake with brush - got a couple of bumps but
no hookups. Also missed one in a blowdown near the point.
Ran to a nearby bridge and threw a jerkbait and tube around the
pilings - often a good pattern but no hits.
Hit a new blowdown on the way back to the one I missed the fish in and
got no bites in it or the one I missed the fish in.
Ran back to the blowdown where I got the keeper this morning. Threw to
the big one a bunch then cast to the smaller one and my line started
moving out. Set the hook on the jig and pig and landed a 2 pound
largemouth at 1:30.
Fished two bluff banks with blowdowns but nothing. At 2:35 ran back to
the blowdowns where I got the two. Made repeated casts but nothing.
Looked at my watch - no need to push it, make one more cast at 2:45
and head in. Got a thump and landed another 3 pound spot from the big
blowdown on the same jig and pig.
Got in with five minutes to spare. Should have made some more casts,
or hit the tree more during the middle of the day!
Winner had 4 spots weighing just under 12 pounds. Second was five at
10 pounds, third five at 9 pounds. My three weighed 8 pounds and gave
me fourth - and locked the point standings for the year. I had locked
up first place in my other club at the October tournament - now if I
could just get big fish for the year at the December tournament!
I had the only largemouth weighed in!
