The internet is amazing.
At the first SJ clave, Dave LaCourse really liked a pattern that I tied and
asked me for more of them on a night or two. He was catching fish with
them. It's real similar to lots of other patterns in use at the Juan.
My pattern morphed a little in the years following Dave's visit, and the fly
has been super effective for me in certain situations. It's not that I
recognize the situation in advance, it's just that sometimes when the fish
there are eating certain midge emergers this fly is great.
I named it the Pirate for Dave and I tied it for a San Juan flyswap
sponsored by one of the river's greatest tiers and a fellow Albuquerqean.
Lo and behold, here it is: Granted, Hooked on Flies ain't exactly Umpqua
and this fly ain't the smoothest piece of work that I've seen, but this
still went straight to my head:

Scroll down to "pirate". If anyone want any of the "real deal" I'll send
you a few ;-)

Neat! You're famous! d;o)
That and some of the other thread bodied midge/nymphs you tied, especially the
abbreviated PT, have taken more than their fair share on the Rapid, Kennebec,
Big Horn, Henry's Fork, et al. Simple but great ties. Thanks Bruce.
