Few people in WWII went a year where they
could be shot or had to shoot someome every day. If people were in combat
a year the medals candy analogy is not realistic.

If people were assigned to line units and spent their year or 13 months
constantly in the field, I have no problem with them receiving any citations
and medals that they could garner. I knew and know folks who spent all
their time on the line and came home with only the everyman medals. I also
know people who spent all their time as REMFs and came home well decorated.
The candy analogy holds better for officers who had a 6 month field, 6 month
staff rotation in many cases so that they could get their ticket fully
punched. Staff officers had better chances of having someone higher up
notice their actions and write them up than the guys at company or platoon
level.
I can't really address the amount of line time people endured in WWII. You
and I both know that units rotated up and back as they were available.
OTOH, some of the folks island hopping were in the thick of it from the
landing until the island was secured. Different times and places.
