not everybody .... I've spent a lot of time in Idaho ....nearly all of it
very pleasant
I already told the one "gone" story, the other one was similar. I was at a
field trial in Blackfoot and went up near Aberdeen (sp) looking for places
to train a couple dogs. I was specifically hoping to find some water areas
along that big lake.
I heard a couple shots and thought it might be other dog trainers, so I
headed that way. I went down a dirt road, then down another smaller one,
and finally stumbled on a shack/ house at the end and was trying to turn
around on the narrow path to leave when a youngish guy popped out with a
rifle, then I saw a second in the bushes, also with a rifle. The first
pointed the gun "at" me ( at the side of the truck and he certainly raised
it to point in my direction, but not drawing a bead on my head or anything )
with a "what do you want, you're not supposed to be back here" ( maybe
private property was mentioned, I don't remember ).
My "guess" is that I had stumbled onto either poaching, a drug lab/ farm or,
most likely, both. The guy looked more nervous than mad. You've probably
seen a big chassis mount dog truck and many people automatically think you
are "government" if they don't know what you do when you drive one. The
dogs started barking and I hollared that I was sorry and was lost and would
leave ASAP, finished turning around and left. Not a big deal, but it did
make me nervous, the guys had a very "druggy" look, and I know that can be
very dangerous. ( One of my claims to fame is that I quit taking LSD
before it became illegal, and I was hanging in the Haight before it was an
"in" thing ....hell I used to hang at City Lights when it was "beaknik" .
pre hippie G I'm a lily livered tea tottler now, but I've lost several
friends to drugs/ alcohol, and feel I recognize "the look" )
Hell, I've grabbed a shotgun and Chessie, a couple times, to go out and
kick tresspassers off my place .... they probably tell tales of weirdo gun
waving Californians g In one case the "hunter" had his kid with him
and was "pheasant hunting" .... I pointed to my house, told him how to drive
to it ( he had hopped a back fence and was parked on a different road ) and
told him " If you come over to the house and ask, I'll be glad to give you
permission to hunt, I might even walk with you with a good pheasant dog" ( I
was thinking of his kid, and hoped the kid would get a bird) To that
offer, "Dad" replied, "**** you, asshole." and stormed off having shown his
son how "real men" handle themselves ...... I assume the guy was a regular
on Usenet G
