Looking to buy a pair of waders and can only get 1 - so my question is
....
What kind?

The breathables are by far the best choice for you. You may find that the
shoes you have donīt fit very well. Depends on what breathables you
buy.You
need good fitting, but not tight shoes, or you will get cold feet. A
trifle
looser fitting is better than too tight. This article is interesting, and
worth considreing, depending on where you will be wading;

I have tried this, ( although I bought some cheap trekking shoes new,
three
sizes too big) and it works very well.
Neoprenes are restrictive, too warm in the summer, ( you sweat like a pig
if
you have to walk anywhere!), and you can easily get cold in them in winter
too, even if you only sweat a little.
And the best part (IMHO) is that you can drive to the river, hop out of the
car, slip into your breathables and go fishing. After you are done, you just
slip off the waders and you're dressed to travel. Meanwhile, your
neoprene-clad friends are hopping around the tailgate on one foot, shivering
in the cold, yelling "hey, wait up!!"
