I don't know if it's still the case, but it used to be the rule
that you can't even carry a long gun which WOULD be used for
hunting a species that's out of season. This didn't apply to
carrying a rifle/shotgun to the range, but to areas normally used
for hunting.
Just during deer season, and .22 rimfire is still OK
You mean, you can't carry a rifle in areas where only shotgun is
allowed? I thought it said NO long gun was allowed when NOTHING was in
season. So, in other words, you could not carry a rifle into the
Adirondacks for bear protection, unless bear happened to be in season.
From the Regs:
"During the open season for deer, it is illegal to:
possess shotgun shells loaded with slug or ball, unless holding a valid
license or permit to take deer or bear, or
possess a rifle larger than a .22 rimfire (muzzleloading rifles excepted)
in areas where rifles are banned for taking deer.
In Westchester County and on Long Island it is illegal to use any rifle
for hunting, or to carry one afield.
In the Northern Zone it is illegal to carry a rifle larger than .22
rimfire or a shotgun loaded with slug, ball or buckshot afield if
accompanied by a dog, except when coyote hunting under permit from the
local Environmental Conservation Officer.
Generally, nonresidents may not possess a pistol in New York State. "
That's all I see.
