ya'll know of any good web-sites for fish identification, particularly

when
you don't know the name. i'm trying to figure out what i caught today.
thought it was a catfish because it had whiskers, but i don't see the

fish
on the chart i have in my tackle box.
thanks in advance-
snake

Did a Google search on north american freshwater fish identification. Got
the following:

http://www.fishpondinfo.com/misc2.htm#cat (has links to several other
sites)
http://www.epa.gov/bioindicators/html/fish_id.html (links to various

state
fish identification guides)

There are numerous others that I didn't bother to look through.

Some time ago I discovered (quite by accident) a wonderful resource that
takes a bit of mining but pays of handsomely. Check out:

http://www.firstgov.gov/

This is the U.S government's official web portal. It's an incredible
resource. A few months ago I spent a lot of time looking at thousands of
photos of fish archived by NOAA (if memory serves). Click on the

"graphics
and photos" link on the home page and take it from there.

Good luck.

Wolfgang
