Many moons ago the NC DNR planted steelhead into Fontana, never really
took
if i recall correctly but the guy who used to post here from the
department
that the remants of that experiment is the source of many a large rainbow
caught in Hazel and the other creeks which feed into fontana.

I know two people that have seen one of those freaky big rainbows...

every time i either fish or walk by that unmistakable little bathtub
sized holding place, the ol thumper picks up the pace. an indelible memory;
glad you were there.
