This may be a silly question, but had you inflated the tube enough? The
tube
should fill the outer covering tightly when it is fully inflated. I weigh
about 245 lbs and don;t have the problem you describe.

Well, no, it did not fill up the nylon covering tightly. I guess my wife
should have noticed this, but she apparently didn't use the tube a lot. I
thought it a little soft, but figured she knew what she was talking about.

Hmmmmmmm ............ sending me out into deep water without enough
inflation ....................... better keep an eye out ..........

Will try it inflated more the next time.

And not such a silly question after all, eh?
