I tie my Sulphur imitations with pale dun natural snowshoe wings, which closely
resembles the natural. For the body, I use synthetic dubbing in pale yellow,
orange/yellow, or yellow/olive, to match the naturals. Generally, I'm not so
fussy about matching body color, but I've found that, at least in my area,
color makes a difference fishing this hatch.
I've tried yellow snowshoe for the wings, and while more visible to me, it has
been less effective in fooling the fish.
My guess is that this is a heavy hatch in your parts. What I've found is
that it's the heavy hatches that are out for an extended period of time
that result in fish being that picky. Locally, that is only on BWO's.
It's also my experience that the fish start out pretty easy at the
beginning of the hatch, but as the hatch continues on for days, the fish
get more picky and require "better" flies. Sometimes individual fish
will key in on only specific stages of types of flies.
